ST.MARYS ASHRAM, KAITHAPPARA |
St.Marys Ashram, Kaithappara
Kaithappara is situated on the high ranges and is included in the 12th ward of Kanjikkuzhy Panchayath of Idukki District. People from Meenachil, Thodupuzha and Muvattupuzha taluks began to migrate to this place from 1954 under the Government scheme to cultivate more rice. St. Mary?s Ashram was founded in 1969. The parish, including all the Syrian Catholics living at Kaithappara, Manayathadom and Makkuvali, was separated from Udumbannoor and got attached to the Ashram church. Manyathadom and Makkuvali are three and five miles from Kaithappara. There are about 200 families at present, of which 50% are Christians. Majority of them are marginal farmers. Medical, Educational and travel facilities are quite insufficient. The Vazhathope - Udunbannoor M.L.A. Road passes by this place. It is perhaps the shortest route to Idukki from Thodupuzha. Rev. Fr. Benno Kallupurackal is the first superior of St.Mary’s Ashram. There are about seven acres of land. Coconut, Rubber, Pepper, Cashew, Cocoa, etc. are cultivated. The services of Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Thuruthipillil in this parish is highly appreciated. Now Fr. Johnson Palappally is working hard to give a new face to Kaithappara.
